The two of us

Chosen twice

Introduced by our families, chosen by each other. Both sides still argue about who knew first.

The groom in a red sherwani and cream turban, walking down a leafy path
asked the question

Moaz

Son of Shaheen & Muhammad Yaqoob

Runs his father's shop and closes it early for every family dinner. Practised his one question for a week.

The bride in ivory and gold, holding red roses
made the chai

Sidra

Daughter of Farhat & Abdul Sattar

Teaches Class 5 and knows every child's handwriting. Poured the chai the day the rishta came and has not been allowed to forget it.

How it happened

From a list Ammi kept to a room that went quiet. Scroll slowly; it took us a year.

Chapter 01Winter 2025

Before we knew

Ammi had a list. I was not on it.

Two people in the same city, eleven kilometres apart. She was marking Class 5 copies; he was closing the shop early for a cousin's dinner. Neither mother had said a word yet.

Chapter 02February 2026

The rishta arrives

Just meet them once. Once.

A phone call between two aunties, a photograph passed across a dining table, and a Sunday set aside. Her father said he would think about it, and thought about nothing else.

Chapter 03February 2026

Eleven words over chai

Would you like more chai? That was three of them.

His family came for an hour and stayed for four. Sidra poured the chai and said eleven words in total. On the way to the car, Moaz counted them twice.

Chapter 04April 2026

The first call

Both mothers were listening. Both mothers approved.

Forty minutes, mostly about cricket, with both of them pretending the phone was not on speaker. It was, on both ends.

Chapter 05May 2026

Both families, one table

Somewhere between the biryani and the kheer, it became real.

Biryani from her side, kheer from his, and an argument over who would pay that nobody won. By dessert, the date was being discussed as if it had always been decided.

Chapter 06June 2026

The ring

Miss, is that a ring?

A small gathering at home, a ring that needed resizing, and a room full of aunties who already knew the date. She wore it to school on Monday and let the children notice.

Chapter 07November 2026

Dholki nights

Every night, one more cousin learned the steps.

Both houses strung with fairy lights, a dholki every night for two weeks, and the same four songs until the neighbours joined in instead of complaining.

Chapter 0812 December 2026

Qubool hai

Two families, one table, and now one name.

A quiet room in the middle of a loud night. The maulvi asked, and she answered. Three times, the way it has always been done, and each time a little braver.

We were introduced by our families and chosen by each other. Both are true, and we are grateful for both.
